3 ways To Get Support
As tenants, we know that often the law isn’t always on our side, and many housing laws are written in the interests of landlords. We often feel alone and uninformed when faced with housing problems. But as members of the union we are powerful because we stand together, taking on landlords, housing providers and estate agents.
We’re not an advice service, charity or a law firm. If you just need advice, please check out your rights here or head over to Shelter’s website here.
But if you want to try to campaign collectively with GMTU to deal with your housing issue there are 3 things you can do:

1. Come to a GMTU Housing Rights Session
These sessions are open to members and non-members and take place at Cross Street Chapel, Cross Street, M2 1NL always on the first Saturday of the month from 2:00pm.
Attending one of these sessions is the best way to plan how to challenge your landlord with the support of other tenants in the union.
Many of the tenants at the sessions will have experienced the same problems you are going through, challenged their landlord or housing provider and won.
If you are coming to a Housing Rights Session, please try to bring:
- Your Landlord or Agent’s information and address.
- 2 or 3 concrete demands you want from your landlord, for example, repairs done, compensation, eviction stopped etc.
- Find out if any of your neighbours have the same landlord and ask them to come to the session too.
Through collective action, we fight to get our members deposits back, fix urgent repairs and win compensation from negligent landlords.
2. Drop into your nearest branch meeting

All our branches meet at least once a month, so if there is a branch near your home, you would be welcome to drop in and seek support.
We have active branches covering Harpurhey, Hulme, Levenshulme & Longsight, Moss Side, Middleton, Rochdale, South & Central Manchester as well as a Student Branch.
3. Fill out the support request form
Click the button to fill out our Support Request form and someone from the Member Solidarity Team will get back to you.
Please note: This team is often extremely busy, and made up of volunteer members who do this work in their spare time, so you may not hear back immediately.
