All over the city, people are being ripped off.

Rents are skyrocketing. Homes are in disrepair. Some are outright dangerous. Access to outdoor space is dwindling, and working class communities are being turfed out to make way for shiny tower blocks that nobody can afford.

Tick-box systems are skewed to look for reasons to turn you down rather than find you a decent home. Private landlords and estate agents are more interested in boosting profits than helping you sort out a maintenance issue. Families are moved from pillar to post, permanently living in temporary situations.

It makes it hard to get by. And it’s breaking our communities apart.

But GMTU members are coming together to end housing troubles in our communities.

We are a democratic, multicultural organisation, led by its members to help secure safe, affordable homes for everybody in Greater Manchester.

We think our homes should be safe to live in and repairs are dealt with quickly. We believe that everybody should have access to affordable, safe homes that we can live in for as long as we want or need.

Local groups meet across all ten boroughs of Greater Manchester to strengthen our communities and support each other to get safe, affordable housing for all.

How it Works

Each branch meets regularly so that we get to know our neighbours, make tea, break bread and share stories together.

We discuss our housing problems and share ideas about how to get it fixed. If we don’t know, we figure it out together. We welcome people of all ages, faiths, backgrounds, races and genders to work together to secure safer housing, resolve issues with landlords and get long term, affordable tenancies.

We support our members to choose what works best for their communities so that no one faces housing troubles alone.

Mainstream press would have you think that unions are a bunch of trouble-making strikers who protest at any chance they get. But union simply means communities that support each other to build power. We get our heads together to share the load, find solutions and support each other to live safely in homes we can afford.

Together, we stop evictions, win compensation for repairs, and campaign for affordable homes.
